1、to spread one's wings (to go out on one's own ;to be independent)
When he was allowed to spread his wings, he went a little crazy.
Many over-protective Chinese parents will not let their children spread their wings at the age of 18. (something will not happen anytime soon; don't count on it; no guarantee)
Concerning your promotion, I would not hold my breath if I were you.
(靠不住) If you are waiting for her to get married, don't hold your breath.
All the employees are holding their breath about a pay raise.
(但希望仍然不大) The government held its breath on three occasions about prices. (You may keep what you have found.) I am lucky because I found it.
“Finders keepers, losers weepers ”can become an ethical question.
When he found a ten-dollar bill in the street, he told himself, “Finders keepers, losers weepers.” (something is very important to someone; to be someone's basic characteristics)
It seems to me that patience is his middle name.
Good service is his company's middle name. During his high school years baseball was his middle name. (也就是He is good at baseball.) 5、to pat someone (oneself) on the back 在背上轻轻拍打,也就是对某人或自己表示鼓励、赞扬或庆贺。(to praise someone or oneself)
I have to pat myself on the back once in a while.
(once in a while=sometimes;但for a while 则是指for a period of time) Whenever he does his work well, he likes to pat himself on the back. I patted Mr. Wang on the back yesterday after his graduation.
I will scratch your back if you will scratch mine.
When the boy had an itch, he asked his mother to scratch his back.
Miss Su deserves a pat on the back for doing a super job.
